New User,introduction
 

Hello all,
This was the first list e-mail I have received since I just joined. I just installed xubuntu-12.04.1 To a old computer, a IBM X86,260mb ram, it is running but pretty slow at times.
I would have used LinuxMint 10, but the computer could not handle it.
I would like to add, this computer had windows_nt 2000 on it, when I got it, and when I tried to use my USB,"broadband device" the windows malware would just shutdown,..after I got the MS malware out of the computer,and installed xubuntu, it accepted the "broad band" device just fine, and connects to interenet,.pretty slow but it dose work.
I do not have or use any windows on any of my computers.
I am wondering though if anyone knows of any "mods" I may be able to do ,to help speed things up ?. One thing, but I don't know that it would make any difference, I don't use any of the XOffice, or office stuff, would it help any to remove that ?

XFCE is not very stressful of system resources, compared to other
desktop environments, but you might want to try some that are even
lighter. Using the software center look for LXDE or E17/Enlightment.
Both are are full featured but with even smaller footprint then XFCE.

XFCE is not very stressful of system resources, compared to other
desktop environments, but you might want to try some that are even
lighter. Using the software center look for LXDE or E17/Enlightment.
Both are are full featured but with even smaller footprint then XFCE.

Using a lighter desktop environment will help, but the 260MB RAM is the
limiting factor. If you can add more RAM it will make a world of
difference. If these solutions don't work a distro optimised for
low-spec PCs such as Puppy or Damn Small Linux might be best.

You test xubuntu with the alternative installation cd : http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/
But carrefull, choose "alternate" link to download. "the Alternative CD requires only 64 MB" of RAM.

You could install lxde by sudo apt-get install lxde them log out and
when log in, just choose lxde. If you prefer a clean install perhaps
you should try Lubuntu http://lubuntu.net/ or even Trisquel-mini
https://trisquel.info/ if you want something free as in freedom. Both
use the LXDE Desktop Environment that use less of your resources.

Hello,

Be careful with multi-environment install, because processes installed with XFCE environment will not all released with LXDE. It's a good thing for testing a new environment when you have RAMs, but it's not the best thing to do for saving RAMs.

In the same way, after installing XFCE, I launch the command "top" and I try to uninstall all processes that I don't use (i.e. blueman for bluetooth,...).
