failure to upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04.1
Hello
This week I performed one system upgrade from Lucid to Precise on a 32-bit system and it went without any obvious issues. Today, however, on a 64-bit machine, I tried to do the same upgrade but it failed. dpkg complained of too many errors and aborted. (Because the last window 'restart/close' was modal, I couldn't copy and save the list of packages that couldn't be installed.) A bunch of packages---some related to X.Org, I think---didn't get upgraded. Neither was grub, as I still see the old grub after restart and I don't have the new kernels available. The bootsplash is changed though. Now I have a corrupted system containing part Lucid part Precise packages, using a Lucid kernel. I cannot even boot to a virtual console using a Lucid server kernel: The booting process halts at about 7 seconds with a 'disconnected from plymouth' message. This wasn't supposed to happen. So how do I proceed? failure to upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04.1
Hello
I managed to make some progress on this. I used a chroot environment (as described here [1] using the SystemRescueCd) to repair grub (now I can boot 3.2.0) and to run multiple 'aptitude', 'dpkg --configure -a', 'apt-get install -f', 'apt-get dist-upgrade'. In the end I managed to get down the nr of unconfigured packages from ~2700 (likely the entire upgrade batch) to some ~700 packages. [1] http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-Partitioning-EN-Repairing-a-damaged-Grub To my surprise after a reboot I managed to *almost* boot the 3.2.0 kernel. I get the following errors: init: plymouth main process terminated with status 69 init: mounted-dev main process terminated with status 1 mountall: Event failed Next is what I think a slightly erroneous message as both / and /boot drives are clean (manual check). : The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. When I hit 'M' for manual recovery and I run 'mountall' I get the following error: "Event failed" My booting issues still revolve around 'mountall' and 'plymouth. Both packages are in the list of packages that haven't been configured yet and that 'apt-get' and friends are unable to process. Any ideas on how to work around this?
