Hi,
Just wondering is it a good idea to leave 'Spin down hard
disks' on in power manager settings, battery power.
Obviously it would save a bit of power, but would it shorten
the life of the hard disk due to increased
starting/stopping?

Actually, it can crash the operating system if the kernel
happens to try to write to swap space or needs to write buffers
to disk, potentially leaving a corrupted file-system. *Might not
happen as much now with ext3 and ext4, but still... *If you are
going to try that, then a) don't use swap and b) run 'sync;sync'
before the hard drives are spun down.

If this is true, the defaults need to be changed, or at least added
in with a bit of code to sync the disc before it is spun down.
