Spin Down Hard Disks

Just wondering is it a good idea to leave 'Spin down hard
disks' on in power manager settings, battery power.
Obviously it would save a bit of power, but would it shorten

Actually, it can crash the operating system if the kernel
happens to try to write to swap space or needs to write buffers
to disk, potentially leaving a corrupted file-system. *Might not
happen as much now with ext3 and ext4, but still... *If you are
going to try that, then a) don't use swap and b) run 'sync;sync'
before the hard drives are spun down.

If this is true, the defaults need to be changed, or at least added
in with a bit of code to sync the disc before it is spun down.
