Hi everyone,

You may have heard by now, but earlier today Xubuntu 12.04, codenamed
Precise Pangolin, was released!

Xubuntu 12.04 is a Long Term Support release (LTS) and will be
supported for three years per the Xubuntu LTS plan.

If you're running Xubuntu 11.10 you will have the option of doing the
upgrade to 12.04 via the Update Manager, if you need to download the
ISO the download page is here:

http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

And a quick note for folks looking to upgrade from the last LTS release:

Upgraders from 10.04 to 12.04: Please use 'sudo do-release-upgrade
-d', notification for the distribution upgrade won't pop up until
12.04.1

I would like to do just this. However, is it a safe plan to upgrade
two such distant distros? I heard that people were having issues when
updating, say, from Maverick to Natty. Is a Lucid to Precise upgrade
supposed to go smoothly? Is it documented somewhere?

You don't want to upgrade between non-LTS releases, so you wouldn't
want to upgrade from Natty to Precise directly or Maverick to Oneiric.

LTS releases are designed to be upgraded directly between each other,
so you could upgrade directly from Hardy to Lucid, and this cycle you
can upgrade from Lucid to Precise.

That said, even though this "sudo do-release-upgrade -d" option is
supported right now, you may want to wait until 12.04.1 when the
Update Manager prompts you to do an upgrade.

You might need to run the update manager from the command-line with the '-c' option.
% update-manager -c



This tells the program to look for major release updates as well as normal package updates.

If you are on 10.10, it is no longer supported and will never prompt
you to upgrade. You will need to upgrade to 11.04, then to 11.10, then
to 12.04. You can not skip any of these normally. The only
non-consecutive upgrades are LTS to LTS, which would have been 6.06 to
8.04, 8.04 to 10.04, 10.04 to 12.04.

Hi,
12.04 seems like a great release so far, very polished and well-rounded.
There is just one small issue. On laptops, when using Fn and volume
keys, the volume doesn't update - the loudness meter flashes, but the
mixer volume does not change. Shall I file a bug or will this get fixed
soon?
