Xfce 4.6-beta is now available for Intrepid users and release plans.
Hello,
After speaking with a few Xfce developers today, I just wanted to clarify the origin, intent, and state of these packages. First off, I'd like to apologize if the impression was given that these packages were in any way an official beta release. Instead, these packages were candidate snapshots for the first alpha release for 4.6. and have since been updated to fix critical bugs. As requested by Xfce developers, I'd like to fully clarify that these packages are not of beta nor even alpha quality. The intent of these packages are to provide an easy way to test xfce 4.6 snapshots for Xubuntu developers - not users. :-)
If you have any further questions then please feel free to either reply to this list or contact me personally.
Finally, Kudos to Michael for preparing those snapshots for us.
Cheers,

As my first task an Xubuntu developer, I've worked to package Xfce
4.6-beta (4.5.80) for intrepid, and I'm glad to announce tonight that
I feel that it reached the point where its worth announcing an open
beta test for Xfce 4.6-beta, both to find Xubuntu bugs, and any Xfce
release issues. As there has been a fairly massive rewrite of some
major sections of Xfce, it is now a good shakedown cruse to find any
issues with this release, and work towards filing the bugs upstream.
In addition, we've used this opportunity to port some of the Xubuntu
specifc patches such as the unified logout screen.
It should be stressed that these packages are still extremely
experimental, and are not recommended for day-to-day use yet, and
these packages have not been extensively reviewed or tested by the
Xubuntu team. In addition, to stress the experimental and to
discourage usage by non-developers, we have only released binaries for
intrepid. As more people use and review these packages, issues will be
resolved, and make the actual Xfce 4.6 release that much easier. In
addition, not all the Xubuntu specific changes have been made yet,
such as modifications to the help menu item.
If you are running Intrepid, you can install Xfce 4.6-beta by adding
the following line to your sources.list:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xubuntu-dev/ubuntu intrepid main
As this is the xubuntu-dev PPA, any changes must be uploaded by either
myself, Cody, or Lionel. I'm willing to sponsor any fixes, and in
addition mentor people on outstanding issues (being tracked here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/Roadmap/Specifications/Intrepid/Xfce4.6).
For those new to Xubuntu development, this is an excellent way to get
involved.
As an aside, if there is great demand for it, I am willing to backport
the 4.6-beta to Hardy once as a team we're convinced there are no
remaining issues with the beta testing.
As always, happy hacking.
