I do not think that the website can help.

We are trying to pinpoint the fault that is giving me intermittent
http 504 errors.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.

Then I'd suggest to use something like tcpdump or wireshark on the
external interface of your proxy to see what exactly times out.

Is there an online guide as to how to do that? I'm a ME major, not CS,
and I don't want to make a whole university course out of this
problem. I'm googling for info, but find nothing at the 'dummies'
level.

Well, I'd say, diagnosing network-related problems might require some
network-related knowledge. At least I don't know of any dummy's guide on
how to achieve what you want to achieve.

OTOH, maybe the logs of your proxy provide some hints on what is going
wrong. I'd take a look at them - maybe after increasing the log level.

I know. The problem is, that the ISP has tools for testing Windows
machines. Guess which OS they don't have tools for. I spoke to a
knowledgable tech and he is willing to work with me on Linux to solve
the problem, but I need to help him from my end as much as I can.

No proxy.

And where does the 504 HTTP status code (Gateway timeout) come from?

Since you provided almost no useful info what exactly you're talking
about, I'd consider the chances to be very slim that anyone here is able
to give useful assistance. I doubt that more than wild guessing can be
expected.

My understanding was that he came here wanting information on tools with which to trace routes, not on his http500 errors.

If the tech suggests you use "iptrace" and you can't find it...then you
should ask the tech for more information as to what he expects you to use.
I am not sure as to why anyone here would be better at guessing what this
tech expects than you are.

In other words, Ask the Tech what he wants you to do in explicit terms.

How do I determine that?

I really don't know what info would help. How about this page:
http://dotancohen.com/images/examples/bezeq.html

There are some things that I'm knowledgeable about, and many things
that I am not. This is one of the things that I am not knowledgeable
about, though I'd love to learn.

How did you determine that this error occurred in the first place?

> I really don't know what info would help.

How about the most basic info, what *exactly* you did when the problem
occurred and what *exactly* happened. I still don't know that.
Useful info might be, for example:
- Which browser?
- Which website?
- How is your machine connected to the internet? Directly? Otherwise
(how exactly)?
- What is the exact error message?
- Does it happen always?
- ...

If people don't know what you did they won't even be able to decide
whether they are capable of offering help or not.
At least I am still not sure if I can be of any help with your problem.

> How about this page:

Might be helpful - but can't say for sure because I don't know what you
did and why, when you took those screenshots.
BTW: why didn't you simply copy and paste the command and it's output
but took those shots of the terminal window?
