Default Acer Aspire 4520 w/AMD Turion 64 & Ubuntu 7.10

Hello Acer / Ubuntu experts
After 2 not successful installations of the 64bit AMD Ubuntu version we
tried with the 32bit version !

It's slightly better with less unknown messages at boot but
the Ubuntu logo with the bar takes again an eternity without bringing
the lightbrown login screen !!

Shown again is the same text (with initramfs) as already mentioned
earlier !!!

What may going wrong here ???
Still some fragments from previous LINpus installation ??
Formatting the HDD completely anew ?

Your advice and hints are very appreciated ;-)
TIA, cheers, svobi
