Does it do anything? Need more information to help you. What does it do?
Were there any install errors? Can you press Alt+F2 and get a terminal?

Which ubuntu 7 version? How far does booting get? Are you sure your're
booting from the right hard drive? Architecture? HDD? Memory?

Options received thus far seem to indicate new user should tread very carefully here.
One of options was something to do with PCI card, another b 43-phy0 and b43/ucode5.fw which appeared on black screen. Also something being needed to add to my wireless chip, a driver I think. (I am not wireless)
All of this being said is it possible to start over with 8.04 Live CD. If so must I format that drive that ubuntu resides on presently.
If that is an option can I do it on gparted.
Finally I will entertain any suggestions that are not beyond my limited capability

I restarted my computer and now have a black screen. No icons or any gui
signs. I am in Kubuntu as everything works i.e. I am not in a command
line mode. If I press alt/F2 I can open any program by typing its name.
Once I am in a program it works perfectly. I can browse, read my email
and open links and attachments. Everything is working. How do I get my
graphic desktop back? I tried the repair mode which didn't help.

Sounds like plasma-desktop did not start. I think that is the proper
spelling, not at my KDE desk right now, but you can manually start it.
If you updated stuff recently try opening konsole and updating stuff
again, perhaps an update did not go in or was missing.

As suggested by utek, the plasma desktop did not start for some
reason. Try to launch it with krunner with the command
'plasma-desktop'.

Thanks for the info utek and Miriam. I tried that but that doesn't seem
to be the problem. The plasma-desktop goes black when logging in. Black
(with nothing else visible on the screen) seem to have become the
default colour, "covering" everything on the old desktop. I have gone
into display and changed themes to no avail.
As I said I can operate anything from "run", including settings, and
basically any program I type in. They all come up as they did before
this problem arose.

There is a quirk which fails to start the plasma desktop when you have
upgraded KDE but after you do what I just suggested the problem disappears.

Tried that to no avail. I think the problem is one of the settings of
the desktop because if I go into "repair" mode and then go to command
line and type startx, the gui desktop comes up. It isn't "my" desktop,
just an empty plain gui KDE desktop. When login in "normally" the
desktop starts to appear after typing my password and then goes black.
It is though a black cover has been formed over the desktop because all
the programs work with ALT/F2 and the typing the name of the program.
All this time the mouse curser is visible and is movable but clicking
anywhere on the screen does nothing until I use ALT/F2 and then I can
type in the name of any program and click on the list that appears to
operate the program. The mouse and keyboard work perfectly on any
program opened.
There is also no panel visible at any time and if I minimize a program
it disappears "under" the black screen.
