Looks suspiciously like Google hot #1 for the above quote [1], but there
is no resolution there. In your case, the completely black screen
probably comes from the fact that Hardy is trying to run the
Compiz-composited desktop.

If you google "GART Table is not in FRAME_BUFFER range", there are lots
of other of hits. Maybe some of them explain how to make your fglrx
driver work.

Otherwise, you should ssh into the machine and change the "fglrx"
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf into "ati". This should prevent Compiz from
running and you should at least get a screen.

I am able to progress into the regular GUI login (Gnome) but after
trying to load the application bar across the top, it gives up and
bails out back to the gdm login screen. All I keep doing is logging
into safe-Gnome mode and running update-manager over and over thinking
that some package is not getting updated as required. I feel I am very
close to getting the 8.04 LTS upgrade to work with this laptop, but it
is still not quite right. I appreciate any pointers.

Do you have a backup from your gutsy xorg.conf? If so, then make a backup
from your current setup and then retry the old one (your post suggests it has
been working before).

If you haven't done a manually backup of your xorg.conf then look into
'/etc/X11/' if there has been done one during upgrade.

Not important probably to you now, but this package has changed. Remove the
old 'bcm43xx-fwcutter' and install the new 'b43-fwcutter'.
