Hi all,
I've installed a ubuntu 7.1 on a sony vaio VNG-BX196VP, and when I try to
shutdown the laptop, I see the shutdown sequence but the laptop remains
switched on. Is there something I can check to solve the problem?
Thanks,
Luca

How much of the shutdown does it get through?

I have the same problem with a Sony VIAO PCG-N505VX.* Ubuntu will shut down but the notebook will not automatically power off.
I suspect that my problem is due to the BIOS's ACPI support (or lack there of).

I have a big Sony laptop with winXT and Ubuntu Gutsy working just
great. But the computer is not happy with closing the lid. It goes into
a strange mode I can't get out of either with winXT or Gutsy.
So I have learned to turn off the computer before closing up the
laptop. Takes a minute more but it is fine with me.

All. At the end the laptop says that the system is shutted down, the monitor
goes black and the laptop seems power off, but the cooler and the leds are
still power on.
What can I try to solve this? COuld it be a bios problem?
