Apologies if this is an FAQ that I haven't been able to locate, but...
On one of my machines the Live CD boots to a BusyBox shell with a user
prompt of (initramfs) no matter what boot option I select. As I'm
thinking of migrating from Debian to Ubuntu on this system it would
obviously be helpful to get past this point! :-)
The CPU is a Pentium III at 800 mHz with 768 MB of RAM and is perfectly
happy to run Debian Etch, so is presumably compatible with Ubuntu.
Any thoughts anyone?

Not really, but you could try the Alternate CD (with text-based
installer)

I would try a gutsy live CD and see if that works.

Thanks for your response(s). It seems that I worded my original question
less than clearly in that I was looking for some diagnostic input, not
suggestions for alternatives.
I'm presently quite happy with Debian Etch and was just interested to
see if Ubuntu was now viable as an alternative. On an AMD Athlon 64
system with a modern PCIE graphics card, both the i386 and AMD 64 live
CDs are indeed viable, but it would seem that older graphics cards give
the installer a headache on my Pentium systems.
This I wouldn't mind, but for the lack of any useful diagnostic output
when it fails. A BusyBox shell prompt gives nothing to work with on one
machine and the other just freezes as 'X' starts up.

Usually BB/initramfs will give you a reason. Were there any messages?

No messages at all: just the prompt.

That looks very useful. I'll give it a go tomorrow.
Many thanks.

all_generic_ide was all that was required. Many thanks for the tip.
