Sorry...not from where I am in Southern California. It works fine. Click

it is being blocked in your part of the world?

Irvine. Now it works for me from Laguna Woods, complete with pop-ups
and new tabs all full of advertisements....

Pop Ups? Advertisements? Use Adblock+ or Adblock lite and No Script and
you should never see any ads at all. Works for me.

Although, come to think of it, now that I'm using Xubuntu, I like it
better than GNOME 2.

MR

Xubuntu is excellent, and I have it one one of my low-power boxes and my
Ubuntu Studio system (does a great job). But I prefer Mate on my
personal computer and the family multimedia server.

I don't use Chrome myself but I'm sure there must be plugins for it that
will do those jobs for you.

I should have said my DNS server - Open DNS - blocks the site.

I have no idea why it would be ID'd as a phishing site. It is the
official home of snowlinux and is above board. There are several
snowlinux debian platforms. All are solid pieces of work.

Try the top-level page and work down from there.

<www.snowlinux.de>

Tried that right away.
Sent an email to Open DNS explaining what the site was, they just
replied that they removed the phishing tag so now all is well.

I don't want to imply that Chrome is not good but to hear that
ad-blockers and no-script don't work in Chrome is not surprising. The
way Google gets all that money is from serving up advertisement and
doing data mining. Google is probably trying hard to keep anything,
that would get in the way of doing that, away from Chrome.

I have just tried Mate 1.4. This is good enough that I'm going to
upgrade most of my machines from natty, the last gnome-2 desktop system.
If you do a lot of development, and liked the gnome-2 desktop, then,
really, give Mate 1.4 a try. I found that the new Mate is faster and
seems to use significantly less of the CPU.

See

http://mate-desktop.org/

There are nice instructions for installation under ubuntu.

Perhaps you are right and it takes a click or 2 more to find an app in
the Dash & run it, but in 18+ months of usage on 3 or 4 PCs /every
single day/ (after 7yrwith GNOME 2) I have not noticed this once. Not
once.

So I think that your statement "not made for mouse users" is unfair
and gives the wrong impression. Unity is not a touchscreen interface,
it is not a phone interface, and it is not a copy of the Android or
iPhone GUI. It is a *desktop*, designed to be used with a mouse and
keyboard, and works very well in this capacity.
