Default 12.04 and printing

Printing in 12.04 seems to have taken a massive retrograde step. The
only printer control dialogue has only the simplest possible options. I
can't stipulate the printer address, the printer driver or anything.

Are there any better printer control utilities out there, preferably
easy to install? I'm using gnome3, but that should have no impact on
printer utilities, should it?

My specific problem is that print jobs to a printer that worked fine
under 10.10 doesn't appear to even receive jobs; the pathetic printer
utility says the job is "pending" and I see regular notifications that
the printer subsystem has a problem "connecting to device" (timeouts).
lpq, however, reports the printer as ready and printing.

Brother-HL-5350DN-series is ready and printing
Rank Owner Job File(s) Total Size

1st (null) 37 untitled 0 bytes

I've found hints that printing PDF is problematic, but I can't even get
a test page out.

Any hints gratefully received.

Regards, K.
