Is that a Unity (3d) thing? In Unity-2d I have to click the cog in
the top right hand corner then System Settings > Appearance >
Behaviour and switch On auto-hide. This assumes that that the OP
means the Unity Launcher when he says the side bar.

Well, the top panel can't be auto-hidden at all, can it? That's why I
didn't upgrade Ubuntu since 10.10… Now I guess I am forced to anyway,
though…
