Ubuntu 12.04 Problems with update manager in WLAN without connection

Greetings,

I use 12.04 for some time now frequently from a location with a public WLAN that requires a login process before allowing full access. After connection establishment the WLAN allows DNS (and maybe some other protocols. Full INTERNET access only after the login.

The update manager regularly gets in trouble - leading to a corruption of the package listings and the recommendation to use apt-get command. Usual error messages:

....
W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://de.archive.ubuntu.com precise-backports Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <ftpmaster@ubuntu.com>

W: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/Release
....

Usual remedy (found through google in some ubuntu wiki):
# rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
# apt-get update

While this (somehow) works for me, it is a big nuisance. The update function of the package manager maintaining it's database shall be more robust to avoid it falling on it's head in the first place. Network connections can be unreliable and the software should be able to deal with it.

Cheers .. problembear

Ubuntu 12.04 Problems with update manager in WLAN without connection

sorry for using the html email mode and thank you for responding ..

rethinking .. 'network manager' might think it has a connection (e.g. DNS resolution into the INTERNET works fine) .. but without login to the WLAN, all attempts (e.g. by the update manager, etc.) to contact .. http://ubuntuupdate.somewebsite.somedomain .. will lead to the webserver of the WLAN provider responding with his login page .. maybe the update manager is not checking for the information source and taking the response from the WLAN provider webserver as package update information ?
