First, boot it off the Ubuntu CD and run memtest. Leave it for at
least one full pass and preferably overnight.

It might be; it's hard to tell without having a better understanding of
what's going on - could you let us know exactly what the error message
says? Is anything hitting any logs (/var/log/syslog
and /var/log/kern.log are good places to look)?
