VHS to computer save query

Hi all ,
have just managed to get a Kaiser Baas DVD maker to work,( installed
mercurial)

in Ubuntu 12.04 with TV Time, is there anyway I can save the played
VHS from here and write to dvd? Some of my tapes are getting old.
A friend tried to do it for me on Win7, (the kaiser baas device is his),
but it will only do a black and white

in Win7, have colour in TV Time here on Ubuntu.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
take care
Winton

This doesn't answer your question, but:-

If your tapes are of commercial origin, more and more old stuff is being
"digitally remastered" from the original tapes and is available through
e.g. Amazon. For instance, I'm sure I looked several times in the past
but could not find a of DVD "Dune" - the version with Patrick Stewart
and Sting, but it is now available. Also bought "Two Mules for Sister
Sara" and "Chato's Land". For the few quid they cost it's not worth
messing around trying to convert them yourself IMHO. Also, at long last,
got a copy of "Back and Fourth" by Lindisfarne on a 2012 remastered CD.

OTOH if they're tapes of personal material such as weddings and
holidays, yes you need to get them converted. Consider though, is it
worth the trouble of doing it yourself? Aren't there loads of specialist
services that are set up to do this for a fixed fee who probably have
higher spec. equipment than yours?

Personally I've gone through this loop converting a few vinyl LPs to CD,
including building my own RIAA pre-amp. They sound pretty damn good but
it takes so much time that I gave up and bought CD copies mostly for a
couple of quid apiece and used the time saved to go cycling, walking
etc.

Hi Dave,
thanks for that, but am on a pension with a house mortgage,
funds I don't have an excess of, but have plenty of time.
Apart from that, I would like to know how to do things for myself,
getting older, but not yet feeble, although there are those who may
say otherwise, :-)
Take care.

Let's focus on getting the problem solved, rather than chit-chatting, especially when the chit-chat is tearing people down, instead of being constructive and building-people up.

Sorry,

This was not meant to tear anyone down. I liked one of the movies
mentioned. Brought back good memories.

Oh, I'm sorry, I was not exactly sure, and I didn't know what type of movie that was, so it was definitely hard to tell! :)

With apologies to squareyes & the rest of the list:

Don't worry Nick... Gauger is a poseur, hypocrite, and blatant liar. For
some reason he has decided to offer 'guidance' on this list starting
last month... Not to worry, he'll next tell you:

"Thank you. We will use your input to make the Ubuntu experience better."

and that he's a member of the "Unity Design Team" when in actuality his
entire involvement with UDT is a mailing list subscriber.

Unfortunately the "moderators" of this list just let him continue. My
suggestion is to just plonk him/killfile him and be done with it.
