On a ubuntu box (which uname -a print is given below) i cant see the
/var/log/messages file ? I havent seen this on a linux installation
before so where is the system logging done till now?

/var/log/syslog? Or are those not the messages you are looking for?

That was the first thing I thought of as well, but I don't think that
natty (11.04) would use a Kernel 2.6.28 from 2009. Actually it should be
2.6.38-something. Therefore I suppose there is another problem.

There isn't one there by default. You have to go through some gyrations
to have it running again. It can work, as I have mine working again.
