It's old news by now. Over on the Fedora List many disagree with this
and state that it violates the GPL. So, it very well might not happen
if it does. Ric

You may want to read this:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/linus-torvalds-on-windows-8-uefi-and-fedora/11187

"All platforms that enable UEFI secure boot should ship in setup mode
where the owner has control over which platform key (PK) is installed.
It should also be possible for the owner to return a system to setup
mode in the future if needed."

What's the chance of that happening?? Pull my other finger. Ric

You shouldn't be so negative my brother.

You must have faith in the goodwill and intentions of Microsoft and the
business sector.

To do otherwise is just being indicative of you requiring a lobotomy.

Walking up and down the main street in your neighbourhood while
furiously twirling the tambourines and shouting, "Microsoft's UEFI is
GREAT!" will provide you with 50 virgins - guaranteed! - when you
self-destruct.

I don't think I could ever get that drunk! Ric

You could, you know, if you REALLY, really, tried.

Just think of having KDE installed on your system and let that thought
flow over you.......

You see. You are already reaching for that bottle of Jack Daniels... :-) .

As a moderator I just keep hoping that it will die a natural death and
think that avoiding to feed the trolls is the best action. Apparently
that's not the case as I count 2, maybe 3 if you're generous out of
the 10 or more posts above actually relevant to the userbase. Those of
you continuing to post random chatter to the 5000 users on this list
might find their emails moderated.

For more information, as always, there is the FAQ

Please, on topic or take it elsewhere.

I tend to puke too easily from strong drink, but I've had some meds in

Okey-dokey, then.

What's the Moderator's answer to the question about the UEFI problem?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuUsersListFAQ contains SFA re the question
of the UEFI.

You may or may not get an answer from moderators. That's not our job,
and we're not necessarily expert in all of the topics on the list. We
don't have to be in order to notice when postings are trending
inappropriate.

Personally, I have no clue. I'm dreading the arrival of Win 8 and the
machines it will engender. This is way more troubling than winmodems.

(With apologies for an OT, non-technical email...)

This is a link [1] that was on a blog to which an earlier post linked.

Ubuntu went the way of a tablet interface two versions ago - before I ever
saw what Win8 looked like. I'm getting used to it, I guess.

And to the topic:

>As opposed to previous releases of Windows, Microsoft this time around is
imposing its' will on hardware vendors with a new Secure UEFI boot system.

This is nonsense. Meaningless propaganda.

The linux kernel already supports it, and my desktop's ASRock motherboard
has a UEFI bios. It's been in around for some time now.

The OS is not forced into using anything. It just needs to understand how to
use it to boot.

It's an advance in bios technology - an upgrade to the outdated bios code
that motherboards have used until recently.

And if the OS wants to use the 'signed cert' parts that MS is embracing,
then god bless em.

IT can use all the help it can get in keeping the networks we care for
running smoothly and infection-free.

AMD has announced it going to insert an ARM cpu core directly onto their cpu
dies. It will be dedicated to security. Things are getting interesting...

Anyway there's nothing to see here folks, so move along. Just another false
alarm.

By your reply, I get the impression that you are unaware of oaa the
implications of UEFI. UEFI is not yet fully implemented only parts of
it exist and you say you have used it? How?
