Default install Realtek device 8176 (rev 01) on Lucid Lynx

Hi,

I'm trying to install the following wireless card

07:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8176 (rev 01)
Subsystem: Dell Device 8194
Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR-

on a Dell Inspiron Mini with Lucid Lynx and 2.6.32-41 kernel. The card used to work on 2.6.32-x kernels, probably with rtl8192ce driver.

Trying to compile 92ce_se_de_linux_mac80211_0005.1230.2011.tar.gz, RTL819xCU_USB_linux_v3.4.2_3727.20120404.zip and RTL819xSU_usb_linux_v2.6.6.0.20120405.zip fails on the affected machine. (I downloaded the kernel headers.)

What to do next? (Switching to Windows 7 is no option, although the card is working there.)

You could try a newer kernel. 3 or 4 are in the repos: Lucid gets
backports of all the kernels from newer releases, so you can have
Maverick, Natty, Oneiric and possibly even Precise now - I've not
checked since it came out.

It seems to consist of python and shell scripts. How is it possible that it handles the hardware?

I personally swear by it, even for my wired needs. I seem to get better
throughput. Ric

But it doesn't help if the hardware isn't supported by the kernel and
that was the original problem of this thread.

It might help if you post the error message when compiling fails and a
link to the source files. And do you use the 32bit or 64bit kernel?

It doesn't. The "use WICD" answer was an incorrectly-triggered
pavlovian response that's an unfortunate but standard answer of the
type "it must be NM's fault, uninstall it and install WICD" when
someone's networking setup doesn't work.

It's often good advice, though. Well meaning, if nothing else. Ric

Thank you for all the replies!

I upgraded to Precise Pangolin (12.04 LTS). Everything worked out of the box. I haven't found a solution for this issue. I could recompile the driver (rtl8192ce_linux_2.6.0006.0321.2011) I've already had for the old kernel.
