Hi all
I have a standard desktop pc.
I've been trying to upgrade Oneiric to Precise using the upgrade tool
which advises that 12.04 LTS is available
I click on the Upgrade button, it downloads the Release Upgrade Tool , 2
apps, then nothing happens., Ive waited 10 minutes watching the System
Monitor and there is no internet activity.
My daughter upgraded her laptop easily on Saturday evening but I have no
luck.
Any suggestions on how to proceed the upgrade are most welcome.
thanks
roger

Upgrade onereic
Do you see a progress bar anywhere? Are any windows up? A few times
I've gone to upgrade and a dialog will popup behind some other window
blocking installation until I confirm something. Or other times the
install will attempt a restart and it will be blocked by some program
like a text editor that isn't exiting so make sure all your apps are
closed.

Upgrade onereic
There is a progress bar for the release upgrade tool, then that
disappears and there are no other apps open, no windows open except for
the update Manager.
I've now tried on 3 machines, Dell 1520, Presario and my home desktop,
with wireless and eth0 with the same result. Most strange.

first thing I did was try installing from shell, I'm in the habit of
updating via shell anyway.
I think I've found a way.
This page
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/open-source/ubuntu-1204-arrives-and-its-great/10836
shows:
Paste this into /etc/apt/sources.list
Fron th elist I selected,
SouthEast Asia (Singapore)
deb
http://ap-southeast-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com.s3.amazonaws.com/ubuntu/
precise main restricted universe multiverse
I did this and in a terminal ran:
sudo su
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade again
Went to Update Manager after it ran and pushed the Update to 12.04 - it
is now putting 1074 files into the Dell laptop which I anticipate may be
the 12.04 upgrade files.
Here's hoping!
But it still does not explain the failure of the automatic update

It's not an uncommon fault with GUI update managers. Fedora's Package
Kit is notorious for it. Quite often with that, you have to send a kill
- -9 because when it fails it locks up yum so you can't use the cli.
Haven't come across it yet with Ubuntu but Debian does it also but very,
very rarely (only once in my experience since I started using it back in
Sarge).
Glad you got it sorted :-)
Cheers,
Phil...
