Default Sys log equivalent

Hi all,
does anyone know of an equivalent to "sys log" in 10.04. to run in 12.04.
I have Gkrellm, but I need to keep track of my download/upload amounts,
and the speed of both, as I have a restricted quota on mobile wireless.
Firefox on 10.04 often would not shut down, and I used sys log to kill it,
and was a handy facility to have.

Many thanks in advance.
Take care
Winton
