Sound on 11.10
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1 Hi, all. I've just installed Ubuntu 11.10 (a successful upgrade from 10.04 -> 11.04 -> 11.10 from within the distro itself) & I'm having real problems getting any sound at all. I don't know if the sound worked on 10.04 or 11.04 as I didn't hang about long enough to find out; I just went straight to 11.10 as soon as I could. Using headphones I can hear audio static when playback (either from audio CD or You Tube) is running as I can over the several sets of speakers I've tried. I've installed all the ALSA stuff & Pulse too as well as the restricted extras. I've looked at this page: <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure> & steps one to seventeen & to be frank even step one looks a bit drastic just to get to enable the sound if it indeed works after that. I've made sure nothing is muted anywhere although it does smack of just needing one click on something for my head to blown off on headphones. My audio card is recognised: `00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 3012 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 43 Memory at e04c0000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+ Capabilities: [70] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00 Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel Capabilities: [130] Root Complex Link Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel` & the machine I'm running on is a HP dc7600U 2 x 2.8GHz Intels, 2 GB's RAM in Ubuntu/Unity 32-bit. Any help/advice would be gratefully received & appreciated. [snip] Apologies for replying to my own thread but just in case anybody else has this problem or is scouring Google late one night looking for an answer, basically you have to ascertain which card you have like so: `cat /proc/asound/card0/codec*` then add it to `alsa-base.conf` thusly: `sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf` replacing vim with another text editor if you don't use Vim. Then add at the tail of the file: `options snd-hda-intel model=MODEL` with `MODEL` being replaced by the model of your card. I got away with using `basic` YMMV. Then reboot & all should be OK.
