how does log viewer works?

I meant to know its internal calls (a high level). how does it interact with gnome shell (I guess)?

Do you mean how to start it, or how to use it?
To start it, assuming you are using Unity, then open the Dash and type
log file and it should find it.
Once it is started it is fairly obvious.* If the file you want to look
at is not shown then use File Open and browse to /var/log to find the
file* (it should default to there but does not always).
