Did you try all the options?

Nothing at all? Even if the device was not of a recognised type you
should still see something when you plug it in I think. Dead cable?
Don't take offence, but I presume you have switched the camera on.

File system DCF, Exif 2.3, and DPOF compliant
Still looking but inserting the memory card into the SD slot of the pc
works ok

Also you can open a terminal and enter dmesg
after plugging in the camera, that may give you a clue. You should see
messages recognising the usb device when it is plugged in.

Tried that did not see anything

My camera has to be switched on prior to hot plugging it. Ric

No, just what the camera handbook says

Handbook says it shall not be switched on.
My first try worked well without switching camera on.

What I did not mention is that when it did not work I had inserted
another sd memory of card of 128 mb from an older digital camera.

Now it works with the new memory card of 8 gb which I bought together
with the Nikon camera
