As /Non Sequitur/ put it (http://www.gocomics.com/nonsequitur/2012/01/23):
Why Dragon?
It means it's an election year, so it'll seem to drag on longer than usual...

Maybe it should be the year of the Pig. All the politicians are way deep
into the mud slinging already. Or, maybe the year of the Monkey. They
throw excrement. This is going to be a nasty election year.
Now before you all jump my case I realize that the pig is a noble animal
and probably has the highest IQ of any other animal o the average farm.
They wallow around in the mud because they have no sweat glands and the
mud keep them cool.

Ouch! Dragon would be highly appropriate for the year 2012.

A wealthy Chinese merchant had 3 daughters of marriageable age so one
morning he called them all together and asked the eldest one, "Who would
you like to marry, my daughter?"
She replied, "Father I want a husband who is brave and fearless and so I
want him to have 3 Dragons tattooed on his chest!"
And he asked his second eldest daughter, "And you, my darling, what
about you?"
She replied, "Father I want a husband who will spend more time with me
and not away fighting wars so I only want one who has only 2 Dragons on
his chest."
Finally he asked his most favourite and youngest daughter, "And you, my
sweet?"
"Father, I only want a man with one dragon on the ground..."
Boom, Boom!
