Default device state change: ip-config -> failed (reason 'ip-config-unavailable')

after the wired network connection in my hotel room had *seemed* to
be working for a short while, now i'm getting nothing, and all DHCP

very much like this report involving wlan0:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1863011.html

the tech support guy for the hotel network was amazingly versed in
ubuntu, and first asked me to try mii-tool, followed by ethtool, but
no luck. so i'm open to suggestions.

wireless is available but slow as heck, so i'd really like to figure
out what the deal is with eth0.

I'm using wicd instead of network mangler. I couldn't take the pain any
longer. I've read here, for some time, how others liked it and when NM
decided to get weird, I ditched it a couple of evenings ago. So far, so
good! I have a wired connection to a HughsNet Dish Sat modem and it
would get wqonky with NM every once in awhile. No problems so far. Ric
