Log-in screen gone mission in Ubuntu 11.04
This is more of a display issue. The log-in prompt is actually there but not being displayed, so if I type in username and password (blindly) I get to log-in.
I had a look at the /var/log/syslog and the only message which I found relevant is
gdm-simple-greeter[2952]: Gtk-WARNING: /build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.24.4/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5687: widget not within a GtkWindow
and I've already tried re-installing gdm. How else can I fix the "gdm-simple-greeter" issue. But why can't I access (or see) CLI with ctrl+alt+F1 (this shouldn't be a gdm related issue) .
thanks,

It sounds more serious than that. *Have you had a look in syslog (use
the Log File Viewer) to see if there are any rude messages when you
logout. *Also look in ~/.xsession-errors (have a look there before
logging out first to see what is at the end of it so you will know
what has been added, if anything, as it tends to be full of warnings).
