I saw that your laptop is a very recent model, that is, it was
released after Ubuntu 10.04.

Have you checked System->Administration->Hardware Drivers, to activate
your graphics card proprietary driver?

If this doesn't work, you have to try the latest Ubuntu release, 11.10.

Ubuntu 11.10 comes with a touch-centric UI that also works with a
mouse, the same approach upcoming Windows 8 does. If you can't live
with that, you may try Xubuntu 11.10, or Kubuntu 11.10.

As it doesn't know the display controller name, only the devide number
0116, I would assume that your kernel doesn't know that device good
enough to use the desired resolution. I would suggest to try a newer
kernel. There are backported kernels available in the 10.04 repos. Try
the packages "linux-image-generic-lts-backport-maverick" and "linux-
image-generic-lts-backport-natty".
