Default lots of emails waiting to be expunged issue

Using imap or pop? What version of evo? What version of Ubuntu?

Can you go to where ever the mail is (your isp or other email provider)
with a browser and fix it there?

Deleting and re-installing evolution isn't going to change the state of
things on your email provider's server if you're using imap. If you're
using pop, everything is local so nuking either ~/.evolution or
~/.local/share/evolution (depending on the Ubuntu and evolution version)
and a re-install *might* do the trick.

Better advice from the evolution cognoscenti is to be found on the evolution list:
