I'm at a loss to say what program I have installed that may have started
this behavior but for some reason, on occasion, the look of my desktop
changes of it's own accord when I click on the panel.

First I'm seeing this:

which after an innocent click, suddenly becomes this:

Clicking on System>Preferences>Appearance changes it back without making
a choice, in fact even before the window opens to make a choice.

What could be going on?

That's almost certainly gnome-settings-daemon crashing for some reason.

When/if that happens you can restart it manually from a terminal or
ALT+F2. Going to the appearance dialog will probably restart it too,
hence it 'fixing' without you doing anything in that dialog.

Cheers,
Al.

Restarting from a terminal worked alright.
Nothing about it in the daemon log.

Thanks... I learn something new every day.
Scanning that log I see a number of possible problems..
New post...
