It's Youtube's own official short URL service, for putting links on
microblogging sites. (I.e. Twitter, to all intents and purposes.)
If you've not seen it before, you don't get out much!

I watched the beginning of the first one, but I ran out of patience. I
much prefer text to video or audio.
Yes, you're right, the dialog boxes should auto-size to fit smaller
screens. I'd file this as a bug or perhaps better still a paper-cut.
I would note that in my experience Windows does /exactly the same
thing/ on 800*480 screens and in some cases on 1024*600 screens.
Indeed it can do it right in the setup program, making it very hard to
install it at all.

I don't have a problem with hidden buttons because my screen is so large,
but that bit about the Launcher popping up and getting in the way is my
major complaint. It wasn't thought out very well...

Hey Douglas,
I'm a developer on the Unity 2D team. Your second video showing the Launcher locked on screen is a massive bug,
but I'm using Unity2D every day and I've never experienced it (aside from this bug: [1] which isn't your issue).
Nor can I find any such report in Launchpad.
Would you mind answering a few questions:
1. Had you noticed a concrete way of reproducing this bug?
2. Does the Launcher behave correctly ever? As in, is the auto-hide working at the start, but then gets stuck?
3. This is stock Ubuntu install, or an upgrade?
4. Can you please tell me the model of the netbook you're using?
5. In a Terminal, please run
dconf read /com/canonical/unity-2d/launcher/hide-mode
and
dconf read /com/canonical/unity-2d/launcher/use-strut
and give me the shell output. These keys define the launcher's behaviour. I'd like to check that they're set ok.
We want our software to work properly for everybody, I am sorry you're having such a poor experience. Any assistance
you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there's something wrong there. You do not need nor want sudo to
run that.
Please make sure you do "sudo apt-get update" and try reinstalling
dconf with "sudo apt-get install --reinstall dconf"

Â*
It's not so much an effect as it is standard behavior. I log in with a vnc client and I'm forced to use Unity 2d, so the 3d effects aren’t happening, if those are what you mean.
Â*
I'm afraid to run any of the tweak tools because of what's been experienced by people on this list.
Â*
Unity has several problems going on:
Â*
1) A window's edge is so thin that you have to find and grab (or hold the mouse over) a one-pixel-wide area to move/resize a window, or to get the Launcher to pop back out when it's hidden. That's a pain for me to do, and I'm not handicapped in any way. I hate to think what people who shake or have impaired motor skills have to go through.
Â*
2) The Launcher does not have consistent behavior: often programs open behind it and it does not close, (so it's in the way) and at other times when a program's window opens, it closes and remains hidden.
Â*
3) The Launcher has (for me) unwanted behavior that can't be changed easily: when it's hidden and you reach for the File menu or window controls, it pops out and gets in your way. Or it hides when you get a window too close to it, such as when you're trying to arrange your desktop.
Â*
4) The Launcher is too large and takes up too much screen area.
Â*
Â*
These things come together like the Four Horsemen and make Unity frustrating for a lot of people to use .
Â*
I think if just these few things were fixed, I would have a nicer experience. To be clear: I run Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 on several servers, and I have upgraded a couple of them to 11.10. I still love Ubuntu, and am not planning to switch. I just put up with it.
Â*
If any developers are reading this, I would love it if you only did these few things:
Â*
1) Never allow programs to open behind the Launcher. I'm not sure that makes sense even on a hand held device.
Â*
2) Let us decide where the Launcher lives. Having it on the left causes conflicts between programs and the Launcher.
Â*
3) Make the Launcher thinner.
Â*
4) Make window's edges (borders?) wider. Meaning the left, right and bottom edges.
Â*
Oh, and while we're add it, allow me to choose a theme that places the window controls (close, min, max) on the right side so that I don’t have to reach clear across my 24" screen.
Â*

One way to guarantee that a developer at least reads your comments is
to file a bug report. I don't think there are any others.
