I have ubuntu natty 64 bits. I have 4GB of RAM and swap 8GB.
So I h ave trouble with memory. It seems Firefox takes too much memory.
Look my "top"
Eventhough I stop firefox and run it again. It takes much memory.

How many tabs do you have open? What addons do you have installed?Have you fired the app up with a fresh profile - does it make a difference?Have you tried other browsers such as Opera, Chromium, Chrome and do any of them exhibit the same memory requirements with the same pages and tabs open?

What version of Firefox? I am not up to speed on which versions of Ubuntu have which versions of firefox but memory utilization is one of the improvements that came along FF5 or FF6, IIRC. If you are not using FF7, you should definitely try that (google on how to install the ppa for it).
Firefox is a known memory hog, at least on Linux. I left it in favor Google Chrome sometime back (7.10?). But on my current local system *(10.04 LTS / 4G / XFCE ), with FF7 and Chrome beta, Chrome is using signifcantly more memory than FF. *Each with a fair number tabs, and a large handful of addons.*

Yes it's true and this is for that I swapped to Google Chrome...

Try disabling its extensions, rerun it, and tell us the amount of RAM it uses.

I hope you don't mind me asking but was there a reason for you
choosing Chrome rather than Chromium. It's only been this last week
i've started using Chrome. I didn't realise that Chromium was the Open
Source version, and Chrome was google's revamp. As Chrome was straight
.deb i installed it - Chromium had a few dependencies and addons which
i didn't want to explore. With google i always wonder what else
they've put in to a package.
Have you compared the two? I couldn't get the syncing bookmarks to
work and wonder if that is a conflict with google toolbar that i used
to use!
[I also found FF and Seamonkey to a lesser extent heavy on memory so i
decided to change].

Firefox needs too much memory
Olivier,
I think the best method to see the additional memory usage of Firefox,
is to run in a terminal the command free -m, before and after
runniging firefox.
You should check the second line from the output, the one with "-/+
buffers/cache:".
