If you'd like to know what those mean, you should run
man ps
and have a read
You need to use 'ls -l' to view the directory permissions on the
directory* ** for directory in /var/www
* ** drwx------ 10 www-data www-data 4096 2011-07-04 02:31 GNDEC-SMS-Service
-rwxrwxrwx* 1 www-data www-data* 177 2011-07-16 14:29 index.html
-rwxrwxrwx* 1 www-data www-data*** 7 2011-07-17 11:55 test.php

and its parents, or if you prefer you could su to www-data.
* I am newbie to it.Can you please tell how to do su to www-data?
** Thanks
