Reading CD & DVD discs => "Error File not found."
 

The DVD/CD drive had been reading discs ok when the Maverick 10.10 was
freshly installed. As time went by after some updates, the disc in
the CD/DVD drive could not be read. A small box popped up, "Error:
File not found." I tried some DVD and Cd disks, but no success. It
looks like the drive is disconnected. I looked in Launchpad, but it
frustrated me with trying to find solution. Any idea what caused the
problem? Tip from you readers will be greatly appreciated. Thank
you. Jim

Does it still show as connected during the post messages at boot up or in
the bios? It's possible it could be a hardware fault or maybe the
connector(s) worked loose over time? Can you read disks otherwise? If
dual booting does another OS read the disks? Also might help to know
your hardware setup

I went further and tried my external hard drive that has USB to plug
in. When I plugged it in and clicked open 'Main Menu' and 'Places', I
clicked its icon and the small box appeared 'Error File not found'
... to my big puzzle. It got me feeling really frustrated. Then when
I looked at 'Computer' icon and clicked on it, it opened!!! I clicked
CD/DVD drive icon in its box and it opened!!! Huh!! What is wrong
with the Disc icon and other icons in the Places list below 'Computer'
icon? They do not work. It is a relief for me to be able to open
'Computer' so that I could do some filings and back-ups. Thank you

Thank you James for the reply. I should have explained a bit more.

When I inserted a DVD+RW with many photos in it, the little picture of
disc (icon) didn't appear on the screen with its date title. It
happened ok before. When I clicked down Main Menu and I clicked
'Places', yes the icon with the title is there in the list. When I
clicked it, it took a bit too long to finally pop up an 'Error' box on
screen 'File not found.'


I was looking for lightscribe software for my LG Supermulti drive in
Synaptic Package Manager and I think I did downloaded one or two - I
couldn't remember what it was. And I think I clicked it to open it,
but nothing happened. Could it be the reason for the problem? It got
me wondering where I went wrong. Jim

Something is still wrong in my Ubuntu 10.10 system. In Main Menu's
Places, everytime I clicked Home Folder, Desktop, and others such as 8
GB Filesystem and Disk and a small dialogue box popped up, "Error:
File Not Found." It is annoying. 'Computer' in the Main Menu is the
only one I could open for Filesystem. I might as well report problem.
This is just for your information as whether I could get some help
or tips on how to solve the problem from you readers.

I must admit myself naive at understanding how system works in a
PC. I enjoyed flawless performance of Ubuntu 10.10 until a while ago
when I encountered a new problem that unexpectedly happened. I
assumed that there are some other users in the whole world who may
have experienced similar problem and would offer to help me with tips.
This is what ubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com is for. Me wrong?
Anyway, I am now into Launchpad for help.

You did not answer Chhatoi's question. If you log on as a different
user do you still see the problem? If necessary create a new user to
try it. System > Administration > Users and Groups.

Your assumption is right. One of my friends DID experience a similar situation, which did not go wrong for other users on his system. So I deleted his home folder's contents( I know all of it wasn't necessary, but I couldn't pry out the configs for the "Places" menu at the time).


Another idea would be to create a new user, and migrate important data to it later*

Sorry, I misunderstood Chhatoi's message. At that time I didn't
think of myself as an user of my system - just one in the list of
Ubuntu's users. I am a solo user here.
Thank you Colin for the tip. I logged myself out of the system to
change it to another user as like a visitor, but I couldn't get into
the new user system because my user name was the only one on the
log-in list. Guess I already told the system that I am a solo user.
Any more tips from you the readers? Thank you. Jim

Thank you for your reply to my message. Sorry I misunderstood you.
At first, I thought I considered myself as an user in the list of
Ubuntu system. No ... Yes I am a solo user of my system. I followed
Colin's tip, but it could not work. My 'User Name' is the only one on
list. Guess I already told my system that I am a solo user. me wrong?
Anyway, I looked for a 'repair' software in Synaptic Package
Manager and found Nautilus Actions Configuration. Right now I am
learning it. I keep my fingers crossed as to find solution to my
problem. Jim

Your assumption is right. One of my friends DID experience a similar
situation, which did not go wrong for other users on his system. So I
