Does anybody have a feel for the problems associated with
distributing software that employs Strong Encryption.

I have looked around and there is a number of good things
out there but I wonder if the US Feds are still throwing
hissie fits every time this stuff appears in public?

I don't know what "Strong Encryption" is; however, if you go to the Synaptic Package Manager and enter into the quick search field located at the top the following terms (sans quotation marks):


"encryption privacy"

then any number of options should show up.

As far as the F.B.I./N.S.A. are concerned, I have just two words to say both about them AND their (thankfully aborted) Clipper Chip Program:

Now, now, don't you know it's rude to say things like that? If you
just have to cuss at someone (and those two TLA agencies are certainly
worth a nasty word or two), it won't hurt to use an asterisk or two
and thereby ensure it less likely that it's your asterisk.

Yes yes - but my glutimus maximus is near & dear to my
heart and I still would like to know if they are still spreading
trouble upon all those who use strong encryption.

I am sorry if this is to political for Ubuntu; but it is germane to
writing software intended to run on *nix systems.

They probably are but since Phil Zimmermann, the creator of PGP,
beat them in court I don't think you have too much to worry about.

Some European countries had stronger rules about encryption than the
U.S. when encryption became cheap enough (in terms of computing power)
to use routinely. Encryption was considered a munition in France and
may still be considered a munition there. The U.S., of course, had
export rules about cryptographic software which could never really be
enforced due in part to the international reach of the Internet.

I had a problem unravelling his headers so I made the rash assumption
that he was in the U.S. Even if I'm wrong, there aren't many first world
countries that will kick your door down for using/exporting "strong"
encryption.
