My aim is not change ip address of my computer

Nae,, that document is dangerously deprecated... (well, ok, not
dangerous.. you just won't get far since the Network-admin program has
been gutted to prevent confusion with Network Manager.)

Since you don't know which, I'll have to assume that you're using NM.

Go to "System - Preferences - network Connections", highlight the
wired or wireless NIC that you want to change, click on "Edit", click
on the "IPv4 settings" tab, choose "Manual" from the method dropdown,
click on "Add" to enter the static address/netmask/gateway...

Sorry, somehow I missed the paragraph where it is mentioned that it is
an alternative to nm-applet. Thanks for the clarification.
