That's a clue. But what did 'sudo apt-get install' say just before this
error?

Interesting.

Can you try

sudo sh -x /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server start

?

That should print the commands executed by the init script, and tell you
which one failed. It won't tell you why, though, and I'm afraid I've no
ideas.
