Apparently I have an issue with nvidia's driver...I updated to 10.04 and it's been good so far this seems to be the only issue. This is what I get from accessing nvidia
"You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver.* Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server." I've installed and rebooted the laptop several times but it's the same. Basically I can't put on the extra effects saying "desktop effects could not be enabled" Under 9.10 it was fine..I've done no hardware modifications. I have 195.36.24 under current installed and 195.36.08 under settings installed..should I roll this back to the 180's or 170's?

Have you run `nvidia-xconfig` as root?

How about open xterm,
type

sudo nvidia-xconfig

and follow the steps that the program asks?
For me worked well,
if errors put them here..

In looking at hardware drivers it states

in terms of the xconfig I typed
sudo nvidia-xconfig
resulting in the following output:
"Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".
Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'"

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the proprietary drivers but for some reason it is not finding them.

Have you tryed System> Adm > Hardware Drivers

so the S.O. will look into net for the apropriated drivers.. and list them to you..

you click in one of the list and in the button below Activate (something like this, im using pt-br lang)


the sys.. will install the choosen driver..

after it,Â* will apear a new menu in system>Adm> NVIDIA X Server Settings to you configure as you want..

for me it was like this simple... tel where in these steps are you getting problems and what do they say ...

The author of that states:

I guess he's never bothered to look at:

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf
which includes:
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb

and

$ cat nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
blacklist nouveau
blacklist lbm-nouveau
blacklist nvidia-current
blacklist nvidia-173
[Note: the last two are due to my using nvidia-96]
