Default Log in screen dies

A couple of times I've noticed this oddment on 10.04 32-bit, User -A- will
be logged in, and the the screen will be locked, User -B- will log in, and
later User -A- goes back switches to their account, and logs out, User -B-
reactivates their login and when done logs out. At this point the Login GUI
is gone and you are seeing vestiges of what went on during the boot process.
<CTL>-<ALT>-<DEL> causes shutdown, <CTL>-<ALT>-<BKSP> does nada.

If you are using nvidia-96 drivers perhaps this bug is affecting you as
well?

<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-96/+bug/585685>
[Logout after switch user causes black screen and disables keyboard and
mouse]
Unfortunately the nvidia developer that contributes to Ubuntu launchpad
seems to have gone walkabout on this one.

Hmm, a driver bug? Nvidia X Server Settings indicate that I'm running
195.36.24, this was the option in the restricted drivers choice. Restricted
Drivers shows: (version current) [Recommended], versions 173 and 96 show
driver not activated when clicked on.
