Default how to remove all of the "recommended" packages that got dragged in?

setting up a new ubuntu box and i installed the "xmlto" package,
forgetting to add "--no-install-recommends", and got loaded up with
all kinds of tex-related crap i don't want. is there an incantation
to remove the recommended packages for a given package to make all
that go away? thanks.
