Hello,

Is anyone else having trouble accessing the Linux Forms? Here is what I
get -

>Network Timeout

>The server at www.linuxforums.org is taking too long to respond.

>The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the
browser has >stopped waiting for a reply.

I get a daily email from them with head lines, and forum post subjects
as links, and every time I try to click one, I get the can't be reached
error.

Thanks, Ray Parrish

A useful tool to check if the problem is at your end is
downforeveryoneorjustme.com:
http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/www.linuxforums.org

Seems like it's just at your end.

A friend of mine has a motto: "Everything is a freaking DNS problem". It's
actually printed on the back of his company tees. :-)
So first check your DNS server. Are you using the DNS that your ISP
provides? Try OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 or Google DNS:
8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Then come back with the results.

Hello,

I went into System, Administration, Network, and added the two Open DNS
servers to the DNS list, then deleted the two that were previously
there. However when I log into my Qwest DSL modem the status page shows
205.171.3.25 and 2.25 as the DNS servers, which do not match the numbers
that were in the Network configuration dialog.

Could you please tell me how to change my DNS servers? My DSL modem is
an Actiontec GT701, and I am using the Hardy Heron.

Thanks for any help you can be.

OK, I figured out how to change the modem to the Open DNS numbers, but
there is no change, I still can not load Linuxforums.org.

Hello again,

I do not think it is a DNS problem, as I used the following Python code
to retrieve the ip address of lunuxforums.org as 174.132.123.98, and
attempted to connect to that ip address with my web browser [Firefox],
and was unable to connect.

> >>> Address = socket.getaddrinfo("www.linuxforums.org", None)

> [(2, 1, 6, ', ('174.132.123.98', 0)), (2, 2, 17, ',

I then verified the retireved ip address with the following query, which
down quite a ways verifiies that ip address as being linuxforums.org.

So Amadee, [or anyone else who has a clue] what should my next step be
to determine the source of this non-connectivity? Note that my hosts
file is stock standard with no entries other than the defaults.

The browser found the desired site, but could not connect. That suggests
strongly that it is not a DNS problem.

You can completely exclude a DNS problem (or show that it IS a DNS
problem) with three simple steps.

1: Attempt to resolve the problem name using dig.

dig www.linuxforums.org

If you get back an answer, then the DNS is working for you, and
the problem is almost certainly NOT a DNS problem.

If dig does NOT return an answer, then you almost certainly DO have
a DNS problem.

2: If dig did NOT return an answer, try tracing the DNS lookup:

dig +trace www.linuxforums.org

If you get an answer with this, but did not in step 1, then someone
is caching bad data. There is little you can do about it unless you
run your own caching nameserver in which case try clearing its cache.
Otherwise you can wait - but it could be quite a long time; hours or
even days.

3. Now add an entry for the name into /etc/hosts:

174.132.123.98 www.linuxforums.org

You will need to be root to do this.

Does your browser now find the desired site? If yes, it is
*definitely* a DNS problem. Remember to remove the new entry
from /etc/hosts before further testing!

How to fix a DNS problem is a bigger question :-)

Regards, K.

It seems to be a problem with your browser which doesn't wait long
enough.

Same address (174.132.123.98) here. Try

telnet 174.132.123.98 80

Then when you are connected, type:

GET / HTTP/1.0
And <ENTER> twice.

That should give you the HTML code of the main page of the server. And
you could probably see if and where there is a long delay.

Another possible source of your problem might be a delay for the servers
referenced from that page, e.g. ad1.netshelter.net or ad2.netshelter.net
or kona.kontera.com.

What is the output of
dig +short linuxforums.org
dig +short @8.8.8.8 linuxforums.org
traceroute linuxforums.org
traceroute -T linuxforums.org

FYI:

- whois is of no use for connectivity (unless a site's registration
has lapsed of course)

- sometimes more than one site is hosted at an ip address so going to
that address in Firefox will most likely take you where you want to go

- I can only admire your obsession with scripting but there are
regular tools (with flexible options) for resolving addresses
(although I assume that the "none" above must mean that you can feed
your script a different DNS server to be queried)
