Default Karmic and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650

Greetings list!

-product mix-
OS = Ubuntu Karmic desktop
Hardware = HP EliteBook 8530w
VGA chipset = ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650

-steps taken-
Vanilla install of the above OS
Updated OS with System -> Administration -> Update Manager
Went to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers to activate the
post-update, detected ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver for
the above chipset
Rebooted to implement activated proprietary driver
Result: graphics failed, and no xorg.conf to restore

I've since reinstalled the OS && restored all the user's data (pressed
for time
Also running without proprietary drivers, but would like to get 3D (&&
hence Compiz) activated.
Following this thread [1], would like to ask if someone has solved the
above problem first time out, without having to backup data etc.

Any insight highly appreciated, as always

Have a great day!

Stuart
