Default a linux virus: NetworkManager

I was doing some internet browsing in firefox, and suddenly,
the network stopped working. I immediatly suspected the NetworkManager:
I had removed it from Intrepid, but it has been re-installed with Karmic.
I removed again the package, and killed the runnind daemon: still no network, or more
precisely no DNS. I then discovered that this bastard had replaced my /etc/resolv.conf
by an empty one!
After restoring the good resolv.conf, the DNS started again to work...
Can anybody explain this behavior of NetworkManager?

Do you use dhcp or do you have a fixed ip address?

How did you bring your NIC up?

I have a fixed address, set in /etc/network/interfaces

but as I said, the network still worked: it was just the DNS which didn't work,
and that happened suddenly, 2 days after the Karmic install !

Any DHCP client, including network manager, will overwrite the contents
of resolv.conf

Moving along, nothing to see here.

This reminds me of something I was asked to troubleshoot this past Tuesday:* This guy had upgraded his machine to Karmic Koala and was now unable to connect wirelessly* to any access point.* I don't know diddly squat about C.L.I. commands, but for the most part I can make my way around the G.U.I.; anyway, I eventually find out that the default setting somewhere was for the proxy server setting to be on!* Go figure!* (I certainly can't.)* Anyway, after I turned it "off" -- as it were -- the machine connected just fine wirelessly.....* I relate this because I find it very strange.

I thought that when an interface was defined in /e/n/i, nm didn't
bother looking and configured it as dhcp anyway?

Must admit it's been a while since I last tried it, because I remove nm
from machines that aren't dhcp, but I seem to recall coming across this
behaviour.

Hello everybody!

I'm trying to get X (KDE) working on a remote headless machine and
access it via vncserver.

So, I ssh to the remote machine, install KDE and then tightvncserver,
and give:

$ vncserver -geometry 1152x864 -depth 24
Couldn't start Xtightvnc; trying default font path.
Please set correct fontPath in the vncserver script.
Couldn't start Xtightvnc process.

I don't quite understand what is happening. Says about the fonts, but I

On both Jaunty and Karmic on my laptop I installed the system
in it's partition and let the new grub control things which it
always does, and then when up discover WiFi doesn't work. No
problem right? Just put the password for my WiFi router in
Network Manager.

I have NEVER found out where to put the password! So my fix
is to plug in the Internet and when NM gets that right, I have
an invocation that goes:

$ sudo apt-get install wcid

The system reboots and wcid puts up a panel asking for my
password. I give it and from that point onward it works.

NM needs a lot of work. It does work fine on wired Internet
but on WiFi it is hopeless!

Just for the record I have never had any problems with NM, wired and
wireless, fixed IP and DHCP, WEP and WPA.

I am not suggestions others do not have problems but for me it is fine.

Then you really are very stupid aren't you Karl.

Click the NM icon and select your Wireless network, type password when
prompted. If network isn't shown because you don't broadcast SSID then
select "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network". It's really a damn site easier
than Wicd in that respect and doesn't require any additional packages to be
installed.

The problem with the missing font was solved after installing
xfonts-base (I really thought this was a prerequisite dependency for
X-windows so I did not think to check that...)

Now something more strange tortures me:

KDE comes up with garbled graphics ( http://tinypic.com/r/dgjv43/4 ).

~/.xsession-errors gives some error messages but nothing I can understand:

Any ideas? I also tried realvnc from windows as a viewer in case the
problem was in the client side, but again the same problem...
