VMWare and iPod question
I'm trying to use VMWare Server with Ubuntu as a host and Windows XP as
the guest to access an iPod Nano with iTunes. I can manage to get the iPod visible to the guest via the USB port. When I try the iPod restore (it is currently Mac-formatted), the guest blue screens. The first time Windows/iTunes downloaded the 1.1.3 software for the Nano, then blue screened just as it tried accessing the iPod. The second time iTunes extracted the 1.1.3 software it previously downloaded then as it tried accessing the Nano it blue screened again, leaving the Nano in a state where it was requesting a restore and was unusable until I did that. Anyone use VMWare to manage an iPod? -Bart -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users |

not sure about Vmware guest but it works fine with Virtualbox guest XP,
in fact it works out of the box. I googled a bit about ipod use and virtualization, and saw that there (was some?) trouble with virtualbox and iPods, something about USB issues. Must be the issues had been recently fixed...? You have no issues using a Nano with VB, the restore and keeping in sync? -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users |

Try this: Before starting VMware, do a sudo rmmod ehci_hcd This will remove the high speed driver, and is supposed to avoid the blue screen problem. -- John DeCarlo, My Views Are My Own -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users |

That's interesting. It seems to work! Any idea why this works? What procedure do you normally use when using the iPod then getting your system "back to par"? When I rmmod'ed it unmounted some 2 USB drives I had attached to the system. I'm assuming if I disconnect and reconnect them they'll remount, but at a lower speed? -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users |
VMWare and iPod question
Bart,
I've been using VMware / iTunes for about 6 months now - never had a problem, except when I tried to upgrade to the latest ipod update - I didn't ever experience a bsod - but it just never would update... was in some sort of loop and wouldn't ever finish - that could have something to do with me having Rockbox on mine as well - so the boot function has changed... Since I did upgrade to the latest, though, it messed my whole iPod up and now I can only get the Rockbox side to boot, no apple firmware ; - but anyway, just wanted to let you know, I have been using your exact set up without problems up till last night... Happy New Year! (have a GREAT O-EIGHT!) (have a GREAT O-EIGHT!) Thanks! I had previous advice (from John) about using rmmod on ehci_hcd, and it seemed to have both disabled high-speed USB access to my external hard drives and solved my inability to use iTunes in WinXP on VMWare Server and my iPod Nano. Oh well...I'll trade high speed access for now if it means I can use the Nano on my Linux system instead of having to install Windows on a second machine. On mine it did a full restore with firmware 1.1.3 and reformatted it for Windows (I assume it means FAT) then slowly copied over over 100 podcasts. So far, it seems to be working well. Thanks again for the feedback! -Bart -- ubuntu-users mailing list ubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users |
