and a nice Raid Setup 640GB,
With 8400 GS Nvidia ….sweet HP M9040N

proceeded to boot up.

Hey,
Out of interest, have you tried the alternate install disk by any
chance..? It's a checkbox on the Official Ubuntu download page here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Often if the regular disk doesn't get you anywhere the alternate will
still work.
cheers,
Owen.

Ubuntu 7.10 (not working on live cd )
What the differences between the regular disk and the alternate disk?
I don't want to install ubuntu as of yet, just checking on compatibility
issue. (BEFORE) I do install.
Next, is there a SMP Version of (K)ubuntu that would run all (of the Q6600
Processor Cores ?)
Thanks -
Richard

The Alternate CD is NOT a Live CD.
It is* a text installer and I would recommend it for advanced linux users

Running processes on all processor cores is the job of the kernel.
So, you install Kubuntu and it should generally take care of compiling the SMP kernel.
Else, you can just download a vanilla kernel from kernel.org and re-compile it with SMP support.

Ubuntu 7.10 (not working on live cd )
As far as I know, the standard versions of both Ubuntu and Kubuntu comes with smp-capable kernels, so you don't need to bother about that (in the past you had to mess with different kernels for smp and up systems, but not anymore).
