Default Build a customized (personalized) Ubuntu Live CD?

For lots of various aggravating reasons my mothers machine is kaput again.

I'd like to build her a Live CD with all her setting on it and give her a portable Harddrive to store all her data on.

Can someone point me to any walk through or howto pages that can make this a simple procedure?

The immediate gotchas I can think of are:
She used dial up so it would be nice to save that dial up configuration on the Live CD
Her mail client should point to the external hard drive or maybe better yet I'll buy her a 16 gig USB memory key that should always be with her.

She uses flash games and youtube etc a lot so I'll need it to have all the non-free stuff already installed in it.
I should be able to update it and rebuild it regularly...

The idea is I can get her a cheap machine with no hard drive and plenty of memory, she sticks a CD into the machine, plugs in the flash key and hard drive and she's off and running. then is she goes to visit my sister or uses someone elses machine she can get everything she needs and wants just by replicating this process.

Is this idea do-able?
is it relatively robust?

Idea's and opinions?

The ancients who wished to demonstrate illustrious virtue throughout the empire first ordered well their own states.

Wishing to order their own states, they first regulated their families. Wishing to regulate their families, they first cultivated their persons.
Wishing to cultivate their persons they first rectified their hearts. Wishing to rectify their hearts, they first sought to be sincere in their thoughts.

Wishing to be sincere in their thoughts, they first extended to the utmost their knowledge. Such extension of knowledge lay in the investigation of things - Confucius

Ok that looks good thanks.

The more I think of this the more I think that I'll need to make good use of Fox Marks and google docs and gmail/gcal
But the idea is quite sound and quite interesting.

I'm looking forward to it :-)

Not necessarily. It's quite simply to put a Thunderbird profile on an
external hard drive.
