Default Newbie, Nvidia drivers issue

Newly installed Ubuntu 8.10. Nvidia drivers 173 or 177 activated but
not in use. I have EnvyNG installed. Trie to follow the directions,
but not sure if I got it right. Tried to dl the driver from the
website: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.22-pkg2.run, but not sure if I got
that installed correctly either.
Graphics hardware:

Don't know if it can be of any help but this is the way I installed the
driver for NVidia 8200:

- After a 8.10 clean install,

- I first checked in System/Administration/Hardware Drivers which was
the recommended drive, either 173 *or* 177.

- Then found and installed the recommended driver through Synaptics.

- Only then activated in System/Administration/Hardware Drivers and it
worked at once.

- (If required - if it is more recent) the driver from NVidia site can
be installed from a terminal only after completely closing GDM.

First, double check you have the kernel driver installed by typing in a terminal:

lsmod | grep nvidia

You should see something like:

nvidia************** 8114232* 38

If not, the kernel driver is not installed.

If the kernel driver is installed, try running:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

to update your xorg.conf then logout and log back in to restart X, if all goes well you should see an Nvidia splash screen as the X driver is started.
