Here are some things to try:

* try running amule with a wired ethernet connection
* check ~/.aMule/logfile for any useful information
* check dmesg for any unusual error messages
* open a terminal window with top and look for excessive CPU or RAM
use when you run amule

If you were able to install Ubuntu it is not likely that anything is
wrong with the disk controller.
