Default No thumbnail preview of fonts in Nautilus!!

Hi Everybody,

In Ubuntu 8.10, there is no thumbnail preview of fonts in Nautilus any more.
Even clicking on a ttf (or any other font for that matter) tells me that no
application is available for handling this type of file!!

I found fontypython to view font file, but it has its own problems (like
frequent crashes, no way to right click on a file and copy it to ~/.fonts,
etc.)

I did find in an online discussion somewhere that gnome-font-view is
deprecated upstream. But if that is the case, then I assume it has
been deprecated bacause some better alternative is available. But
I could not find it yet.

Could you suggest a better way to tackle this problem? Some way to
bring back font previews in nautilus would be really useful.

Regards,
Santanu Chatterjee

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=555215

AFAIK there's no alternative; gnome-font-view was deprecated during the
rewrite from gnome-vfs to gvfs, and the thumbnailer got dropped by
accident.

I think people are working on that.

I have found no alternative and AFAIK no one at Gnome finds this
important - so no one is working on it. Haven't checked in a few
months though.

Back then I was actually hacking on fontypython to make a "lite"
version - just to preview a font. I got about hlafway there before
other things came up. It would be great if someone stepped up and
wrote a quick font previewer (with customizable preview text). Then
again, no one seems to complain on the list (very often anyway) so
maybe it's not important to most people...

I guess I can expect it in Ubuntu 9.04. In the meantime, I am
using KDE's font previewer.
